TLS Uncertainty Modelling & More

About Measurement Uncertainty

Measurement is one of the most common processes in human activity.

Measured values of quantities are required for a diverse range of applications, and for each of these values, a statement about its credibility is needed.

Such a statement is usually expressed in terms of measurement uncertainty. Together, the measured value and the associated uncertainty constitute the most common way of reporting a measurement result [OIML - G1-GUM, 2023].

About TLS Uncertainty

A Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) is a measurement system capable of measuring millions of 3D points on surrounding surfaces. This results in a dense point cloud of measured values that represent the geometry of those surroundings.

No measurement system is perfect, and TLSs are no exception to this rule.

Each single measured point is subject to measurement uncertainty.

Common causes for uncertainty are instrument optical-mechanical misalignments, the measurement environment, the optical properties of measured surfaces, and the relative position between the scanner and the object.

Being able to make statements about TLS uncertainty is our mission at SigmaScan, and that’s what we provide by our services. This is useful in TLS-based deformation analysis and quality evaluation of TLS point clouds.

Founder

Dr.-ing. Gabriel Kerekes, has 10 years of professional experience in the field of engineering geodesy, 3 of them in the industry in one of the largest surveying offices in Germany and then 7 years at the Institute for Engineering Geodesy at the University of Stuttgart. He successfully defended his PhD on the topic terrestrial laser scanning and uncertainty modeling in 2022. To date, he has supervised and worked on numerous projects with practical relevance to structural health monitoring, quality assurance and kinematic measurements. He has also acquired and carried out third-party funded projects. He has published his findings in various specialist journals, at national and international conferences and in book chapters.  By founding SigmaScan, the aim is to transfer and further develop the knowledge gained up to now in the industry.
